Bad Girls Club: Miami was the fifth season of the Oxygen reality television series, The Bad Girls Club. The fifth season moved filming from the previous location in Los Angeles, California to Miami, Florida[1] in an area on North Bay Road, between 41st and 64th streets.[2] The new season began filming in April 2010, and beginning in 2010, the show was moved forward from its original time slot and now starts at 9 PM Eastern / 8 PM Central time on Tuesday nights. The season premiere aired on August 3, 2010[3][4] and attracted 1.34 million viewers, becoming the No. 1 program on cable with women in the 18-34 age group. The debut also outperformed any other show for that demographic on CBS and ABC. The premiere, in fact, became the "most watched premiere in Oxygen history".[5]
Production
The Bad Girls Club 5 was produced by Bunim/Murray Productions with Kasey Barrett, Claudia Frank and Esther Frank as the main producers.[6] Oxygen networks renewed the series during the Bad Girls Club 4 season reunion on March 23, 2010, Perez Hilton announced that all the girls of Season 4 and previous "bad girls" that were on the show, did not run L.A., they "ruined" L.A. and that the fifth season of the Bad Girls Club will take on seven new girls, with a new crazy experience, in a new city which would be Miami, Florida.[7] Casting for the Bad Girls Club: Miami was done byr Aja Kimura and over twenty other casting directors.[6] Casting began several weeks before the season finale of Season 4 with potential applicants submitting video tape submissions.[7] Casting calls, similar to previous seasons of the Bad Girls Club, began in Los Angeles, and later other major cities: Atlanta, Buffalo, New York, Oakland, California, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.[8]
Broadcasts and other platforms
The main television coverage of The Bad Girls Club was screened on Tuesdays at 9 p.m (Eastern and Pacific Times), which is in contrast from previous Bad Girls Club seasons which started their program at 10 p.m (Eastern and Pacific Times).[9] The show was broadcast on Oxygen in the US which is the same for the Swedish Oxygen network which broadcasts the show as Stygga flickors klubb (Swedish for The Bad Girls Club).[10] The episodes begin with a summary of the events of the previous episodes or events in the house. During the OxygenLive TV recap episode, re-imagined live television experience that for the first time ever, combined social media platforms Facebook and Twitter with program content, allowing fans to submit their own opinions and comments about the show and the seven participants which were aired on television in the 10 p.m slot.[5] In almost every Tuesdays' episodes, Oxygen releases two re-cap episodes lasting until midnight.[11] After a new episode has aired on Oxygen, between two and four "sneak peek" mini-episodes of the upcoming Tuesday's show is broadcast on Oxygen's official website for the Bad Girls Club the following day.[11]
The House
As in previous seasons of The Bad Girls Club, the women live in a mansion that Oxygen provides for them for approximately three months while being filmed by producers who follow their every move. These women must try to navigate around each others' different personalities and lives.[9] Mansions and styles always change with every new season. The mansion used for season 5 was a bachelor pad-style two-story building with its own entrance, security fence, and parkway, and it was on the Biscayne Bay.[9] Inside the mansion's double doors, there is a small hallway in tropical colors, with red-painted walls, a green carpet, and small potted trees. At the end of the hallway there is a pet terrarium tank with a Corn snake, given the name "Oliver" by the girls. Throughout the house, its decorating themes are bright summer colors, tropical colors, and Miami style.[9] Since season 4, the producers have given their reality show stars a chance to express themselves with given items, however, season 5 girls were given replica mannequins of themselves and a wipe board and marker.[9] In the middle of the house, a large Hollywood-themed award adjacent to the stairs holds a ball that says "The World Is Hers". Unique furniture, such as the provided pool table, have Barbie-like dolls on it. The house pool features a small jacuzzi at its end similar to the one in season 4. The small pool beds feature girlie color, such as hot pink, finishes.[9] On the second floor, the girls were given an ocean view beyond the pool outside. Their bedroom walls are either painted red or light green, and they were also given an exercise machine on the balcony, which became a smoking area for most of the girls. The modern-day kitchen tabletops were made of marble.[9]
Format
The format remained largely unchanged from previous seasons. A group of seven rebellious women between the ages of 21 and 27 move into a mansion and must try to co-exist with different personalities, lives, race and sexual orientations and, above all, must try to adapt to the frequent changes of moods and behaviors of their roommates.[11] The seven “bad girls” who premiere on the show must also obey the rules given to them prior to moving in such as no physical violence towards anyone including the producers. The young women must not intrude upon the show's production room and must tolerate various interviews in their "diary rooms".[11] The participants are expected to follow normal societal rules upon leaving the house to go on dates, attend to their personal tasks and when they are parting.
During the show, the young women are put into situations where the house has to be divided for one reason or another, where someone creates havoc to satisfy themselves, and parties are booked. The girls are given either a laptop or a big-screen TV that features a home computer, and hook ups happen in clubs, groceries must be shopped for and the residents juggle it all with their own personal lives.[11] The young women are allowed to contact their families and significant others, and are allowed frequent guests.[11] They must go through some tough situations, such as fights (verbal, spitting, food fights, breaking of personal belongings, and personal attacks), and more physical fighting when one resident has intentions of hurting another, something that every season of girls have to overcome.[11] The women are basically "thrown into" the house and must tolerate one another in order to "make it" to the end of the season: This is usually accomplished by remaining in the show without having to be physically being removed due to physical fighting.[11]
In some cases, some participants choose to leave the show due to issues at home, court, superiority complexes, or tension and stress from another girl or girls.[11] A replacement is usually introduced into the house an episode or two after one leaves. The "core" bad girls are then seen dominating and sticking together to try to intimidate the replacements unless the "newbies" are like them.[11] Bullying and tag teaming are seen throughout the series due to alliances or if a group dislikes someone enough to form a way to make sure that that girl is gone within a day of bullying.[11] At the end of the show, some girls change their ways, a goal of the show, to change these women's "bad" behavior and turn them into role models by placing seven girls with similar behavior with different reasons for being "bad" in one house.[11]
The Bad Girls Club oath was introduced in the third season of the Bad Girls Club:[11]
“ |
A Bad Girl knows what she wants and how to get it. She makes her own way, makes her own rules and she makes no apologies. A Bad Girl blazes her own trail and removes obstacles from her path. A Bad Girl fights and forces her way to the top with style and beauty. A Bad Girl believes in jumping first and looking later. People will love you; people will hate you. Others will secretly wish to be you. A Bad Girl is you. |
” |
—The Bad Girls Club oath[11]
|
Cast
In every season of the Bad Girls Club, seven young women enter the mansion on the season premiere. During the show “replacements” enter the house after a girl departs for whatever reason. Usually only one replacement enters the show per season, however, season one and Bad Girls Club: Miami had three replacements, the highest number to date in the series.[12]
Replacement Bad Girls
In every season of the Bad Girls Club, one or more girls are asked to leave the house either because of their involvement in violent behavior, physical fighting, or out of personal choice. This then gives the producers a chance to introduce a potentially new reality star, who arrives to the house in a day or two later.[15]
